Tools for engaging students in literacy activities
Whenever people think of literacy, they think BORING.
But I am here to tell you that these fundamental skills don’t have to be boring at all.
Here are 3 quick tips for making literacy activities engaging:
1. Make it relevant.
Local news articles, snapshots of texts students are engaging with, issues that are important to them, things they see and are familiar with in their communities.
2. Small group rotations
Not only do time limits on activities and physical movement around the classroom stimulate minds, but it also makes literacy fun and enables the teacher to spend some time with ALL students.
3. Board games to prevent boredom
Grab your old favourite ‘pop n hop’ (or another suitable alternative) out of the dusty cupboard. Students pop the dice, but before they can move, they must answer a multiple-choice language conventions question correctly. Wrong, they stay put!
