Host a work experience student
Support the next generation of agriculture
Hosting a student for work experience is one of the most practical ways to support the future of agriculture.
Through the Ag Work Experience Network NSW, we connect local businesses with students who are genuinely interested in agriculture, trades and rural careers.

FAQs
Insurance - am I covered?
1
In most cases, yes. Work experience students are generally covered under the schools insurance policy and public liability arrangements linked to the school. The school will provide a placement agreement, insurance confirmation and emergency contact details. You should always check documentation before placement starts and ensure the student is formally registered through the school.
Do I need extra insurance?
2
Usually, no additional insurance is required if the placement is organised through a school and paperwork is completed correctly. However, your existing public liability insurance should be current and you may mish to notify your insurer.
What about safety?
3
Students must follow your safety directions, should not undertake high risk tasks and should be supervised appropriately for their age and skill level. A simple approach is to give a basic site induction, explain hazards e.g. machinery, animals and chemicals and provide PPE if required.
I don’t have time, is it worth it?
4
For students, even observing tasks is valuable and small tasks create great impact. A student watching how your business runs is still learning and many hosts find it less work than expected.
What if it doesn’t work out?
5
You are not locked in. If needed contact the school or contact AJA if organised through us.
Do I need to provide a formal program?
6
No, but a simple structure helps. Day 1: induction and safety. Middle: Exposure to different tasks. End: Reflection and questions.
Can students use machinery?
7
Generally no operation of heavy machinery. Instead observation and assisting under supervision or low risk tasks. Schools will provide guidelines that will outline restrictions.
What type of student will I get?
8
Students who have selected agriculture related placements, are interested in agriculture, are studying agriculture at school and are supported by their school.
